The Greencards & The Red Stick Ramblers

with Casey Driessen

Friday, June 5, 8 p.m.

Two great bands sharing the bill for this show. The Greencards from Nashville, by way of Austin, TX, Australia and the U.K. combine conceptual adventurousness with incredible technique to create a sound that is at once familiar and totally new. Their website tells a more complete story. The Red Stick Ramblers connect styles as diverse as traditional Cajun, western swing, blues, and old-school jazz. This Baton Rouge based quintet romps and stomps through a crazy-quilt of originals and classic covers on their new album. Plan for an evening chock-full of great music. Casey Driessen opens the show.

Amelie

Sunday, June 7, 7:30 p.m.

"Imagine discovering a box hidden behind a wall for fifty years." So begins the tale of a french girl named Amelie, whose life view is best described as 'fantasy-inspired'. Inanimate objects speak and interact with Amelie and describe a kind of reality that, if it weren't a film, might lead you to believe she should pay a visit to the nearest psychopharmacologist. Fortunately, she doesn't. This charming, beautifully romantic story, lovingly told in fine cinematic style, was a huge hit on both sides of the Atlantic. (When the marketing department learned it had been added to the calendar, a collective "ahhhh", and sounds of glee emanated throughout the building.) In French with English subtitles and a remarkable musical soundtrack.

Steve Earle

Solo and Acoustic

Tuesday, June 16, 8 p.m.

Steve Earle's new record, Townes, comes out in mid-June. It's an homage of sorts to Townes Van Zandt, the provocative, prolific, and little bit scary songwriter who served as mentor and inspiration to a boatload of artists who washed up on Houston's stages back in the day. While the record features some impressive players, this show is a stripped down Earle. No hot-shot band behind him. Just a man, a guitar, and a perspective that bears witness to the years and miles spent learning his craft. Tickets on sale Friday, May 8.

Mat Kearney

with Erin McCarley

Friday, June 19, 8 p.m.

Mat Kearney's smart, catchy songs from his 2006 album kept him busy and on the road for much of the last several years. In between gigs he finally found time to record a collection of all new songs - "City of Black & White". It's a chronicle of the people he met and missed while touring. It's also another winner. If the strengh of his last tour is any indication you best catch him while you can, because he's going to be on the road for a while. Here's a little sample of Mat's ability to capture a mood and create an infectious tune "Nothing Left to Lose"

Arve Henriksen & James Blackshaw

Saturday, June 20, 8:30 p.m.

Arve Henriksen's sound has been described as, "..breathy, impassioned and alternately earthy and ethereal." Known for artfully combining diverse genres including jazz, electronica, ambient and classical music, Henriksen is the quintessential modern trumpet player. Exploring new sonic regions with sensitivity and technique that engages the listener on multiple levels. James Blackshaw is a monster player. This excerpt from Triptych pretty much says it all, "In only five years, James Blackshaw has earned a reputation as Britain's most billiant young composer-guitarist, wowing the avant-garde and folk underground with his acoustic 12-string reveries."

On Sale Friday, June 5.
